Ersatz Art

My husband and I have begun to watch "The Hunger Games" movies and so far we've just finished the second installment.

My opinion? It's like watching a Picasso come to life and trying to understand what goes where and how and why... too exhausting.

Not that they're bad movies, because they aren't, it's simply that the elements in it are rather discombobulating with each other and it makes it a little difficult to pin it down at times. There are long periods of nothingness and then some action and then long periods of nothingness again.

The most endearing aspect of the first two movies comes from two actors: Donald Sutherland (and who knew he could be such a bastard!)... and Woody Harrelson (who, honestly, plays his typical weirdo).

For me personally, if it wasn't for those two I might not be agreeing to watch the others. The movies are just too bizarre, outlandish and just plain odd. Not to mention how much the premise seems reminiscent of two things: My home life when I was a kid and the bullshit that goes on now. And perhaps it's those two which get me a bit weirded out when watching it. A little too close to home, as it were.

I'm just glad we're watching them during Halloween, so it seems more applicable this weird premise and it's actors.

Would I recommend it for someone else to watch? Probably not, unless they were huge Donald or Woody fans, or if they just like sitting through two hours of angst, sure, go ahead...

I find it hard to fathom that these were such big movies, but that makes me shudder to think of the people who enjoyed them... what kind of masochists were they?
